You may take the theory exam from the age of sixteen, well before you are allowed behind the wheel. That is the advice too: get it early, so during your driving lessons you can concentrate on driving instead of on the rules.
What is tested
The exam has three parts: hazard perception, knowledge and insight. Hazard perception is the quickest: you get a photo of a traffic situation and decide within seconds whether to brake, release the throttle or do nothing. Knowledge covers signs, rules and right of way. Insight asks whether you understand why a rule exists, not only that it does.
The hurdle is almost never the material. It is the pace in hazard perception and the way questions are worded. You can practise for that, and that is exactly what you should do.
How to practise
Practise with exam questions, not with summaries. You learn to recognise the phrasing and you notice where you are still guessing. In the student app every mistake comes with an explanation and study advice, so you can go back to the part that is not there yet.
Two wrong answers on the same topic are not bad luck but a signal. Go back to that topic before practising on. If you prefer a classroom, our theory course in Breda runs every month: through the material in one day, then practise on your own.
On the day
Bring valid ID and be on time. For knowledge and insight, read the whole question before choosing; in hazard perception your first judgement is usually the best. When in doubt, moving on beats getting stuck: the clock is running.
Passed? Your certificate is then valid for a while and you can book the practical exam as soon as you are ready; how that works is at exam and resit. The theory exam through the school costs € 65 and the course € 145; see prices and packages. No theory yet and still want to start? You can: you only need the certificate when booking your practical exam.
