There is no honest one-number answer to what a driving licence costs. It depends on how many lessons you need, and that genuinely differs per person. What we can do is list the items, so you can work out roughly where you will end up.
The fixed items
Registration is € 25 for category B. That covers the administration plus access to the lesson planner and the licence app. We book the CBR practical exam through the school for € 299. You arrange your theory yourself; the theory exam through the school costs € 65, a theory course in Breda € 145.
The lessons
A single lesson of 50 minutes costs € 59. On average someone needs 35 to 40 lessons. Worked out with single lessons that is € 2,065 to € 2,360 in lesson fees, plus registration and the exam. In a package the price per lesson is lower and the exam is included: the complete package is 35 lessons including the practical exam, a progress check and the practice book for € 2,575.
If you have driven before you do not have to start from zero. The starter package of 10 lessons costs € 879 with the exam in it, the value package 25 lessons for € 1,750. Short of lessons? You add a follow-up package from € 585. Every amount is at prices and packages.
Where the sums go wrong
Two things are often forgotten. The first is the resit: whoever fails pays the exam fee again and usually needs a few more lessons. The second is pace. One lesson every three weeks looks cheap, but then the first ten minutes of every lesson go into recovering what you could already do. Driving regularly saves lessons, and therefore money.
Want an estimate based on your driving instead of an average? Drive a trial lesson of € 25. Afterwards you hear how many lessons you are likely to need, even if that number is low. Further reading: how many lessons do you need.
