When do I have to take a CBR driving assessment?

A CBR doctor decides. Usually the assessment follows the health declaration and medical check that come with every licence renewal from the age of 75, or a condition that may affect seeing, thinking or acting behind the wheel. If an assessment is needed, you receive an invitation from the CBR. How the renewal works is explained in our article on the assessment.

Is a driving assessment the same as a driving test?

No. In an assessment the CBR looks at whether you can drive safely given your health, not whether you do everything by the book as in a practical exam. The test takes 60 or 90 minutes: a conversation, 30 to 45 minutes of driving and a closing conversation.

Do I have to take the assessment in a lesson car?

Usually you may use your own car. Sometimes the CBR requires a lesson car; your letter will say so, and you then contact a driving school within 4 weeks. The test must take place within 6 months of the invitation. You can also choose a lesson car yourself. In our lesson car we book the assessment with the CBR for you, using the product code and relationship number from your invitation.

What does a driving assessment cost?

The assessment itself is free. If you take it in a lesson car, you pay for renting it. A preparatory lesson of 50 minutes costs € 59, a refresher course of four lessons € 255. The medical check for your health declaration is separate from this.

May my instructor or a family member come along?

Your driving instructor may ride along and attend the conversations, provided they are qualified for the vehicle you take the test in. A family member may not ride along, but may attend the opening and closing conversations.

How many lessons do I need to prepare?

That differs per person. After the first drive you hear what already goes well and what we will work on, and together we agree how many lessons make sense. There is a refresher course of four lessons, but single lessons are possible too.

What happens after the assessment?

You hear straight away how it went. The CBR doctor then makes the decision: you may keep driving, you may drive with measures such as glasses or an adapted car, another assessment is needed, or you may no longer drive. If the CBR first advises extra driving lessons, we help you with those too.
